Our New Year's day was quite eventful. To say the least, we had a great kick off for our new year! Jayson broke his clavicle!
The boys were down at Grandpa John's for New Year's Eve and they absolutely loved it! New Year's Day I went down that morning to pick them up. Upon my arrival, the boys and Grandpa had just suited up and ready to take on the cold in the snow. Mind you, that morning it had been 3 degrees, at this point it had warmed up a whole 4 degrees more! I stayed inside the house with Mom and Chloe, right where it was nice and warm!
After only a few minutes playing in the snow in the backyard, they decided it would be more fun to play on the four-wheeler in the snow! The boys love that metal horse and have been on it a few times in their life. This being their first time in the snow.

Then it happened.
Kelson ran in, urgently telling me that Jay had fallen off. Following him was Grandpa carrying Jay. I tried making light of his fall in front of him. I didn't want to worry him more and panic about the situation. Deep inside I thought that this might be the first broken bone in the family. (Eric aside) I took his tops off, every movement he cried a little harder. He wasn't super stable standing, I can only imagine as the pain is overwhelming. As I palpated around the collar bone he cried out not wanting me to touch it anymore. He didn't enjoy his shoulder being touched either. I had to take him in. I loaded the kids up and drove home to pickup Eric.
Eric had a great idea while he was waiting for us to get home. He thought to call the pediatrician office since they work after hours, weekends and holidays. Sure enough, they put us on the schedule for 4 o'clock. Given that was three hours away... but Jay was doing fine at this point and they ensured us the wait wouldn't cause any more damage. Plus, if we had gone to the emergency department we would have been waiting just that long if not longer as other office's and clinics were closed.

Jay was so afraid sitting in the room waiting for the doctor to come see him. All this time he feared he was getting shots. Poor guy! Once we explained everything to him, he was back to being sweet, happy and good spirited.
Dr. Adams came in and evaluated Jayson, checking his shoulder on down to his fingers. He felt a slight difference in Jay's collar bones. A radiology order was sent over to the hospital and we jumped in the car and headed over two blocks. At this point, Jay had been moved around so much and had been in and out of the car so many times, yet he was such a good sport! I think he enjoyed having his daddy carrying him all over the place. Lucky kid!

Waiting at Radiology
Everyone said he looks like someone in Star Wars! |
We didn't wait long in the radiology department. The rad tech couldn't believe how cooperative and happy Jay was. She was a sweetheart to him and his good behavior scored him many stickers! The sweetest part is he got one for Kelson. He also asked if we could finally have his birthday cake (I never got around to making it for him on his birthday. Earlier blog post explains why). He asked if his name could be on it as well as Kelson's. I'm telling you, Jay is such a sweetheart. Anyhow, the tech showed us the films and sure enough, no doubt, broken. She added that we might need to see an orthopedic in a week...

Getting back to the doctor's, we were taken right back to their surgical suite. How fancy! The doc came in a few minutes later, he was finishing up another broken arm in the next room (busy day for injuries), and gave us instruction on caring for JJ. NO orthopedic doctor's needed. Such a blessing! His extra small sling was placed and we were on our way! We picked up pizza, under Jay's request, and settled down for the night.
Jayson is a tough kid. I couldn't believe how calm and happy he was for having a broken bone. He never complains about pain, or anything for that matter. We would even move his arm, prior to the doctor visit, to see how mobile he was. If something was too much, his reaction was "ow, ow, ow." in a soft, calm voice. He is amazing and I just can't believe he has a broken bone.

Since that day, three days ago, he is more careful than I have ever seen him! Still does things that makes me nervous, but so far so good. Kelson still picks on him. He pushed him over the day after New Year's, actually. I can only image how hard it must be to be nice to a human you live with not by choice, who happens to be nearly the same age, where the two of you argue often over who gets to play with what and do what and when. It has got to be a hard life! LOL Chloe on the other hand... She tries to crawl all over him, smothering him in loves. Xoxox
